Patan Hospital vandalised after woman’s death

KATHMANDU, FEB 23 -
Patan Hospital has asked the authorities to take action against those who were involved in vandalising its infrastructure on Thursday night.
Some irate people vandalised the hospital following the death of Rita Adhikari of Dhapakhel, who was admitted to the health facility for delivery. Over 15 people had broken doors, windows and some medical equipment, the hospital stated. They have been taken into custody.
Hospital Director Dr Pawan Sharma said Adhikari was administered Bupivacaine, a spinal anaesthetic, for caesarean section. “However, the drug did not work on her as it did on other people. It started showing adverse reactions and she was shifted to the ICU,” said Dr Sharma, adding that both the mother and the child died there.
According to the hospital, Bupivacaine is a widely used anaesthetic, which
shows little adverse reaction. Doctors have said the family members were counselled on the situation of the patient and the possible danger.
Meanwhile, the hospital administration and the kin of the deceased have had a round of talks. Another dialogue is slated for Sunday. Adhikari’s body has been taken for final rites.
